Does Satellite Beach, FL Allow Dogs on the Beach?

No, not on the sand right now. The City of Satellite Beach says pets are not allowed on its beaches, and a January to April 2026 pilot that let leashed dogs on early mornings has ended. Dogs are welcome at the city's fenced E. Lorraine Gott Dog Park, and the closest dog beach is Brevard County's Canova Beach Park on A1A.

This is one of the first questions I get from buyers moving to Satellite Beach with a dog, and the answer has shifted more than once in the past year. Here is where things stand, where you can take your dog instead, and what to check about pets before you buy a home here.

Are dogs allowed on Satellite Beach beaches?

Not at this time. The city's Beach Parks and Accesses page states that pets are not allowed on beaches within Satellite Beach, and it points dog owners to Canova Beach Park and to Cocoa Beach's designated area.

The rule covers all of the city's beach parks and crossovers, including Pelican Beach Park, Hightower Beach Park, Shell Street, and Crotty Park. Service animals for people with disabilities are treated differently from pets under the county animal ordinance that the city adopts by reference, so if that applies to you, ask the city how it handles access at the crossovers.

Did Satellite Beach ever allow dogs on the beach?

Yes, for a few months. The City Council adopted a pilot program in December 2025 that let leashed dogs on city beaches from January 1 through April 30, 2026, during early morning hours only.

The pilot rules, published in Chapter 14 of the Satellite Beach City Code, required a leash of seven feet or less, immediate cleanup, and no dogs in the dunes, with civil fines starting at $50. The pilot was written to end automatically on April 30, 2026, and it did.

In September 2026 the council took up the question again after the city's Sustainability and Recreation boards recommended keeping dogs off the beach, as News 6 reported. Discussion of a possible future ordinance is not the same as permission. Until the city adopts a new rule and updates its beach page, plan on no dogs on the sand, and check that page before you go.

Where can I take my dog in Satellite Beach?

The city's fenced, off leash E. Lorraine Gott Dog Park at 750 Jamaica Boulevard is the main spot. It covers about one and a half acres, with a separate small dog area, a dog wash station, water, picnic tables, and benches.

  1. First visit. Bring your dog's shot records from your vet, make sure a rabies tag and county license tag are on the collar, and fill out the registration form and waiver on site.
  2. Hours. The city lists 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on workdays, with a midday closure for maintenance, and 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on days off.
  3. Rules worth knowing. Dogs stay leashed until they are inside the fence, handlers clean up, there is a limit of three dogs per handler, and dogs 25 pounds or more stay out of the small dog area.

Leashed walks on city sidewalks and through neighborhood streets are a big part of daily life here, and many residents walk the South Patrick Drive and A1A areas early in the day before it gets hot.

What is the closest dog friendly beach to Satellite Beach?

Canova Beach Park, a Brevard County park at 3299 Highway A1A in Indian Harbour Beach, a short drive south. It is the county's designated dog beach.

According to Brevard County Parks and Recreation, dogs are welcome on the beach there but must be on a leash and wear tags showing a current license and vaccinations, and owners must pick up after them. Parking is free, and the park has restrooms, outdoor showers, a pavilion, and waste bag stations.

The City of Cocoa Beach beach rules limit dogs to 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and an evening window that shifts with daylight saving time, and you must enter from a crossover inside the dog area rather than walking in along the beach. The Town of Melbourne Beach posts the county ordinance that keeps animals off public beaches unless an area is designated and signed.

What should dog owners check before buying a home in Satellite Beach?

Check the pet rules for the exact property, the yard and fence, and your daily route to a place your dog can go. Beach rules get the attention, but HOA and condo rules are what you live with every day.

  • Condo and HOA pet limits. Many beachside condos and some neighborhoods with associations set limits on the number, size, or breed of pets, or restrict dogs in common areas. Read the documents before you offer. My guide to verifying HOA pet and rental rules before an offer walks through what to ask for.
  • Yard, fence, and shade. Florida sun and sand are hard on paws, so shade and a fenced yard matter. My pet friendly home and yard routine review covers fences, gates, surfaces, and outdoor rinse spots.
  • Fence permits and surveys. If you plan to add a fence, confirm the survey, easements, and city permit first.
  • Drive to the dog beach or dog park. Time the trip to Canova Beach Park and the Jamaica Boulevard dog park from the homes you are considering, the same way you would time a commute.

From what I see with buyers here, the condo pet rules are where people most often get surprised, especially with larger dogs. Asking for the declaration and rules early saves a lot of disappointment later in the contract.
